Sir Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, T. Stacy Hicks
Sir Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester

Robert was one of thirteen children born to John and Jane Dudley, Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.  He was raised at the courts of Henry VIII, a companion to the Tudor children, and a member of King Edward's household.  When his father was executed for putting Jane Grey on the throne, Robert was condemned but eventually gained the favor of Queen Mary who restored the family in blood.  When Elizabeth came to the throne Robert's fortunes skyrocketed.  He became the premiere courtier because of their romantic involvement.  Their relationship lasted over thirty years and survived the mysterious death of his wife, his marriage to the Queen's cousin, and his debacle as Governor of the United Provinces.  He was considered by most of Europe to be the Queen's consort and often fulfilled the positions left vacant by the absence of a King.  He was a Knight of the Garter, Privy Councilor, and was the Master of the Horse.

The Earl of Leycestre is the understood favorite of the Queen.  He enjoys the favors and power bestowed on him due to his proximity to the crown, powers he will wield to secure his place at the center of politics.  He is the Queen's favored companion for dancing, dining, and hunting. He distracts her from her burdens.  Robert continues to seek the Queen’s hand in marriage but he must also look to secure the future of the Dudleys.  He is the focus of much rumor and conjecture, but he remains aloof.  He is a superb dancer, eloquent conversationalist, brilliant horseman, and the mirror of fashion.  Secure in his position with the Queen, Robert fears no rival and has a kind word for most at court.  His only real political enemies are the Duke of Norfolk and the Earl of Sussex.
