Bristol Bears will hold a groundbreaking Professional Rugby Talent ID Day at the state-of-the-art High Performance Centre on Thursday, April 17th as the club looks to provide young players with an opportunity to showcase their talent in a high performance environment.

Open to players in theU18 (Year 13), U19, and U20 age categories, the Professional Rugby Talent ID Day provides a unique opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and experience in front of the Bears coaching team. The event is designed to identify emerging rugby talent, with players assessed on their physical, technical and tactical ability.

Selection for the event will be via an application process, with a group of 30-40 players invited to the day.

Director of Rugby, Pat Lam, said: “With the Bears having comfortably the smallest Academy catchment area, lowest number of schools and fewest number of registered players aged 13-19 in the Premiership, we’re always looking at new ways to give young talent throughout the country an opportunity to realise their rugby dreams.

“This Professional Rugby Talent ID Day will provide young players with an opportunity to experience the Bears High Performance Centre and showcase their talent, not only in front of the Bears coaching team, but also some of the Bears senior players.

“I believe this is going to be a great day for all involved and we’re all looking forward to Thursday, April 17th.”

Head of Academy, John Barnes, said: “With rugby being a maturation sport, players develop at all different ages and this event provides the opportunity to enter the elite pathway at a variety of stages.

“We look forward to welcoming players from a range of backgrounds and experience to the High Performance Centre on what will be an exciting and unique day.”

Academy U18 hooker Kieran Hill has been named in the England U19 Men’s matchday squad to face Japan U19 this Saturday at Cambridge Rugby’s Ellgia Fields (14:00 GMT kick-off).

Hill, who attends Richard Huish College and is from North Petherton RFC, starts in the front row this weekend after impressing during the Academy U18 league.

As well as key backroom staff from across the England Rugby Men’s Pathway, Titterrell will be further supported by U18 Men’s coaches Jonathan Pendlebury and Will Parkin to lead on defence and attack respectively. Former Wasps hooker and Springboks international Ashley Johnson will conduct scrum coaching for the fixture.

Sale Sharks back-row forward Seb Kelly will captain the England U19 Men’s team this weekend. 19-year-old Kelly has four England U18 caps to his name and made his first four senior appearances for Sharks in the 2024/25 Premiership Rugby Cup. The Kirkham Grammar School graduate also boasts loan experience with Sale FC and Lymm RFC in National 1 and National 2 North respectively this year.

Ollie Davies (Sale Sharks) alongside Northampton Saints’ Oli Scola and Aiden Ainsworth-Cave have been capped in the recent U20 Men’s Six Nations campaign, with U20 EPS members Kelly, Toby Wilson (Sale Sharks) and Josh Mann (Exeter Chiefs) also named in the matchday squad. Nine of the starting XV gained training experience with the U20s in recent months.

Sean Sharp (Harlequins), Rhys Beeckmans (Newcastle Falcons), Jack Cotgreave (Gloucester Rugby) and Luke Griffiths (CA Brive) are in line for their first Men’s Pathway caps this Saturday. Saracens’ Gabriel Registe and Will Knight of Gloucester Rugby could also earn their first pathway caps off the replacements bench.

Knight is one of four 2025 U18 Men’s Six Nations squad members given the opportunity for further representative experience ahead of April’s Festival meeting in Vichy, France. Elliot Williams (Harlequins), George Marsh (Leicester Tigers) and James Pater (Northampton Saints) could also play a part as Titterrell’s finishers in Cambridge.

On their tour of England, Japan U19 overcame Oxford University Select XV 45-14 at Iffley Road on Thursday 13th March before a defeat at Dartford Valley RFC to Saracens U19s, finishing 38-12 in favour of the Premiership Rugby academy this Monday.

Andy Titterrell said: “We have assembled a very exciting, young group for Saturday’s game that will give a platform to evolve players’ skillsets ahead of another key period of development this summer.

“To be joined by Jon [Pendlebury], Will [Parkin] and all our pathway staff has been a fulfilling experience, a brilliant opportunity to further align and a reminder of the quality we possess on and off the field in the pathway. A warm welcome must be extended to Ashley [Johnson], whose expertise has been invaluable in preparation for this weekend.

“Following on from the U20 Six Nations period it’s imperative to open another window for progression and growth for our players, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity in Cambridge.”

Sam Scott, one of the brightest young talents in Welsh rugby, has signed a long-term deal with Bristol Bears.

The 19-year-old tighthead prop, a standout player in the U20 Six Nations, was named Player of the Match during an impressive victory over Ireland U20.

Scott, who signed professional terms with the Bears in the summer of 2024, also represented Wales U20 as an 18-year-old, featuring in all five games during the 2024 U20 Six Nations.

Director of Rugby, Pat Lam, said: “Sam is a talented young player who has impressed on and off the field during his first season of professional rugby. He takes every opportunity available to him to learn and grow from the quality of experienced players and coaches at the Bears.

“To have the opportunity to scrum, as a young tighthead, against Ellis Genge, and our centurion looseheads Jake Woolmore and Yann Thomas on a consistent basis has obviously seen him improve. We saw that improvement during the recent U20 Six Nations where he performed very well up front.

“We have great balance in our tighthead position with three homegrown props with high potential. I’m excited at seeing Sam continue to compete with our young Bristolians George Kloska and Jimmy Halliwell going forward for the Bears.”

Scott said: “I’ve really enjoyed my first season in professional rugby with the Bears and I’m just focused on improving and developing every day.

“This is the perfect club and environment for me to do that, with incredible facilities and working with some world class coaches and players.”

Head coach Jonathan Pendlebury and assistant coach Will Parkin have confirmed their 26-player squad for the 2025 U18 Men’s Six Nations Festival in Vichy, France, this April.

The 2025 tournament will be hosted at Stade Municipal Louis Darragon, home of RC Vichy, and will include Georgia and Spain alongside the Six Nations. England take on Spain on Monday 14th April in the second of three matchdays, bookending the tournament with matches against Scotland and France.

England U18 Men will convene at the Hazelwood Centre, Sunbury, next week in preparation to face Ireland in a friendly fixture at Mardyke Sports Grounds, University College Cork on Saturday 29th March (17:30 GMT).

Previously capped players Matthew Branch-Holland (Saracens, 3 caps), Elliot Williams (Harlequins, 6 caps) and Victor Worsnip (Bristol Bears, 3 caps) return to Pendlebury’s setup. The captaincy role will be rotated in the forthcoming matchdays to maximise leadership development opportunities across the squad.

Jack Lewis, Hugh Sheilds and Charlie Tamani (all Northampton Saints), as well as Junior Denny (Gloucester Rugby), Henry Laidlow (Harlequins), Oscar Talbot (Leicester Tigers) and Declan Treacey (Bath Rugby) are the seven players who have stepped up from the recent U17 Men’s camp at St. George’s Park to secure their place in the squad. Gloucester Rugby centre Will Knight, who trained with the U20 Men’s squad during the recent Six Nations, is also named in the cohort.

Supporters can stream the Festival live on the Six Nations U20 YouTube channel, with tickets available at all three match days of the men’s festival, costing €10 for a match day or €20 for all three match days.

Jonathan Pendlebury said: “With many of the players travelling away and earning caps for the first time, the U18 Festival is an exciting opportunity for our players to grow and take ownership of their development.

“The next month is a perfect learning opportunity for all involved to get better and explore week-on-week. Our messaging will focus on players’ individual progression as well as developing as a unit.

“The immense amount of dedication from the players and staff to implement our pathway framework this season must be commended. The players have adapted well in our camp meetings and now is the time to demonstrate their work in a competitive arena.”

The U17 Men’s team reconvene at Hartpury College on Thursday 8th May for a four-day camp.

England U17 assistant coach Will Parkin said: “As we reach the apex of our season at U18 level, this weekend offers a window for our staff to integrate some new faces to our pathway.

“The focus of our spring U17 Men’s camps is to welcome a number of players to the pathway for the first time. As it is for all our pathway groups, this camp will be all around the players developing and getting better within our environment here at England.

“What we also have ahead of us are upcoming camps in May with a fixture against Hartpury, as we start to prepare for what lies ahead in the summer with a tour to South Africa. This is a chance for some of these players to put their hands up ahead of that.

“The programme for each day is designed to be an intense introduction to the expectations we set for the U18 Men’s team with two rugby sessions, review and S&C all being covered. The staff and I are eager to see how the team come into a new environment, put themselves under pressure and own their own development.”

The Cubs came from 14-0 down to defeat Newcastle Falcons 47-28 at Kingsholm Stadium on Finals Day to finish ninth in the Academy Under 18s League.

An explosive end to the first half saw Bristol score four tries with George Williams, Jeke Bulanauca and Frey Lant crossing the line, in addition to a penalty try.

In the second half Glen Gammell and Arthur Guyot added themselves to the scoresheet alongside a powerful driving maul try in the in the 37th minute.

The Falcons scored a brace of tries in the opening quarter of an hour to race into a 14-0 lead but the Cubs fought back having lots of possession in the Newcastle 22.

After a number of phases in Falcons territory, Bristol looked to pass the ball wide to the left wing but an Alfie Warwick knockdown prevented Bruno Lamb’s pass from getting to Bulanauca and resulted in a penalty try.

Warwick was also shown a yellow card for his actions and during his period in the sin bin the Cubs were electric.

George Williams was the first to benefit from the Cubs man advantage as he connected with Bulanauca after a sublime line break to dive over between the posts. Lamb converted Williams’ try to level the score at 14-14.

Two minutes later the Cubs bagged their third, after three or four phases deep in the Newcastle 22, Lamb looked to go over the top to Bulanauca again – only this time he was successful as the speedy winger caught the ball and crossed the paint, giving Bristol the lead for the first time in the match.

Almost as soon as Warwick returned to the field, the Falcons were shown a second yellow card as Elvis Kitenge-Fuki prevented Evan Russell from taking a tap penalty five metres out from the Newcastle line.

With the tighthead prop off, Lant took a tap penalty of his own and showed unreal strength to carry over, securing the Cubs fourth try.

Lamb kicked another conversion in the final play of the half to give Bristol a handsome 28-14 lead at the interval.

The Cubs momentum continued into the second half, earning and kicking a penalty to the corner to have a lineout on the five metre line.

Kieran Hill threw the ball to Osain Williams and watched a pile of bodies rumble over the Newcastle line as Bristol were awarded try number five, with Lamb still flawless from the tee.

Ten minutes later the Cubs scored again after a brilliant line break by Evan Morris helped him set up Gammell to dive over in the left corner to make the score 40-14.

After conceding 40 unanswered points, Newcastle finally scored their third but again Bristol replied quickly.

Guyot saw the ball at the back of a ruck less than a metre out from the Falcons line, picked it up and carried over; Lamb converted the try to extend the lead to 47-21 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match.

Newcastle had the last say in the game, scoring late on, but it was not enough as the Cubs ran out 47-28 winners in Gloucester.

Bristol Bears and Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) have launched a strategic partnership aimed at growing rugby in the region.

The Cabot Learning Federation is a family of 35 schools in Bristol, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Somerset, covering 18,000 young people in the city from a wide range of backgrounds and demographics.

As part of the club’s strategy to identify talent, attract new supporters and deliver positive engagement within the community, the partnership will include matchday visits, player school visits and inter-school open days and tournaments.

Chief Operating Officer, Tom Tainton, said: “Our focus is to Inspire Our Community Through Rugby Success. We’re Committed to growing the game in our city and that means thinking differently and bringing rugby to new and diverse audiences.

“This developing relationship will help us to work with young people in Bristol who wouldn’t traditionally have engaged with rugby, where we hope to create long lasting affiliations to Bears and to the sport.”

Steve Taylor, CEO of Cabot Learning Federation, said: “A key part of our strategic vision is developing high value partnerships with key stakeholders across the South West.

“We’re looking forward to collaborating with Bristol Bears to provide opportunities for young people within our trust to experience rugby for the first time. Through a range of activities and events, we’ll use the power of sport to continue to raise the aspiration and ambitions of children and young people experiencing disadvantage in Bristol.”

The Cubs cruised to a 38-5 victory against the Exeter Chiefs to finally record their first victory in the Academy U18 League.

Early tries for Caspar Reeves, Evan Morris, Cai Gealy and Jeke Bulanauca saw Bristol earn the control of the match from the get-go, which they maintained throughout the game’s duration.

Morris bagged a second score after half time, with Arthur Guyot also bagging a try in the second period.

The Cubs got off to a scintillating start with Reeves opening the scores after 10 minutes.

Scrum half, Cai Gealy took the ball from the base of a scrum around 30 metres out from the Chiefs line and went blind, connecting with George Williams on the right flank.

With only one defender in front of him, Williams did well to draw his man before passing to Reeves who had the simple task of crossing the whitewash to make the score 5-0.

Bruno Lamb smashed the conversion between the sticks to increase the Cubs point tally to seven.

Over the next quarter of an hour the Cubs were relentless, running in three unanswered tries to build a dominant lead.

The first was created by Lamb who pumped a dummy and sprinted through a gap in the Exeter defence to advanced towards the 22, once there he threw a loopy pass over the top to Morris who dove over in the left corner.

Four minutes after Morris’ effort, Williams created the third try as the Bristol backline dazzled their opponents.

The outside centre ran a brilliant hard line off Lamb and exploded through the Chiefs line, passing in field to Gealy who dotted down under the posts, extending the lead to 19-0.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors as Henry Gascoyne was sent to the sin bin as punishment for his team’s accumulation of high tackles throughout the first half.

Against 14 men the Cubs scored another outstanding try with Lamb dinking a cross field pass to Bulanauca on the left wing.

After catching the ball, the winger stepped inside his opposite man and sped towards the line, diving over in the corner to grow the score to 24-0.

In the 30th minute the number of players each team had on the pitch was evened as Guyot was shown a yellow card for preventing a quick Exeter penalty.

The Chiefs profited from his yellow card period, using their driving maul to score on the brink of half time, making the score 24-5 at the interval.

Early in the second half, the powerful Bristol No. 8 returned to the field and showed his class.

After making a number of rib-tickling tackles in both the first and second period, Guyot was rewarded with a well taken opportunist try.

The ball was loose and it squirted out the side of a Cubs ruck in the Exeter 22 which Guyot reacted to quickly; he picked the ball up and rode multiple tackles before powering to the line from around 15 metres away.

With the Cubs leading 31-5, the game settled somewhat with the score remaining stagnant for long passages of the second half.

Bristol looked to have scored an impressive try midway through the half as Ben Carter carried his side deep into Exeter territory before being tackled, at which point the ball was spun wide to Bulanauca who scored in the corner – however the final pass by Lamb was judged to have gone forward and the try was chalked off.

Lamb and Bulanauca combined again later in the match to score the sixth try.

Lamb, who at this point in the game was playing fly half, stabbed a kick pass into the direction of the left winger who volleyed it forward.

After chasing the ball all the way to the Exeter 22, Bulanauca kicked it again before being overtaken by Morris who dove onto the ball to extend the score to 36-5.

Lamb successfully kicked his final conversion as the Cubs ran out 38-5 winners in the penultimate game of the academy season.

Report: Bristol Bears Under 17’s 20-24 Exeter Chiefs Under 17’s

The Under 17’s engaged in a thrilling back and forth encounter with the Chiefs Under 17’s side with the visitors winning by four points.

Bristol did brilliantly to fightback from 24-10 down midway through the second half to 24-20 as Jardel Furness and Archie Miller crossed the whitewash, but fell just short of a physical Exeter team.

Vinnie Sims and Matas Barisauskas were also on the score sheet, both scoring tries in the corner.

Both teams looked to attack the wide channels in the opening exchanges of the game, trying to wrestle for dominance.

After an Exeter try was disallowed for a forward pass, Alfie Clark forced the spark for the hosts.

The inside centre took a tap penalty before chipping in behind the Chiefs defence, being tackled in the air and earning the Bears another penalty whilst an opposition player was shown a yellow card.

The penalty led to a sustained period of Bristolian possession deep in the Exeter red zone, eventually resulting in a well-earned try.

Furness started the move, running a huge carry to get his side over the gain line before offloading from the floor to Keesan Stewart.

Stewart passed the ball wide to Sims who opened the scoring by dotting down in the corner.

Chiefs replied with a brace of tries on the verge of half time, leading 10-5 at the interval.

Bristol started the second period with great intensity as Freddie Thomas created a two-on-one in a wide channel with Barisauskas, who caught the ball and dove over in the corner to equalise the scores.

Midway through the second half, the visitors regained their lead, scoring a converted try from a driving maul.

Later on in the game, the Chiefs scored a fourth try, making the score 24-10 but soon after, with only a short period of the game left to play, the Bears struck back.

Michael Whittaker got his side into the Exeter 22 after a brilliant line break where he connected with Furness.

After a couple of phases in the Chiefs territory, Miller picked the ball from the base of a ruck and carried over to make the score 24-15.

Whittaker played his part in the next Bears try too, receiving the ball from Phillip Clarke and passing wide to Furness who dove over, reducing the deficit to just four points.

Despite the late Bristol fightback, Exeter managed to hold on, winning 24-20.

The Cubs slipped to a 38-31 defeat away to Harlequins at Gordon’s School in a pulsating Academy U18 League clash.

A Caspar Reeves hat-trick as well as a brace of tries for Evan Morris ensured that Bristol used the width effectively to earn a crucial couple of bonus points on the road.

After a cagey opening few minutes, Quins settled into the game first, racing into a 12-0 lead midway through the first half.

However, the Cubs fought back valiantly with Reeves speeding to the try line for his first of the afternoon, following a turnover on the halfway line cutting the score to 12-5.

Reeves first try gave the match a surge of life, with the hosts replying quickly before the Bristol winger bagged his second.

From first phase, Ollie Harris received the ball with space in front of him where he connected with Reeves who carried the ball through his opposite man to cross the whitewash.

Bruno Lamb smashed the conversion to cut the point deficit to seven points with just over two minutes to play in the half.

Despite only having a short duration of time remaining, both sides managed to add tries to the score board before the interval.

Quins snatched the first in the 34th minute, using their powerful driving maul to push the ball over before Morris replied with the Cubs third try.

Inside centre, Lamb, was the creator as he threw a dummy to fly through the visitor’s defence before passing inside to his centre partner who dotted the ball down between the posts. Lamb followed up with the conversion to make the half time score 24-19.

The Cubs started the second period as they finished the first – by scoring a converted try, to give them the lead for the first time in the match.

Frey Lant ran a dominant carry from a lineout overthrow to put his side onto the front foot.

The ball was then spun wide to Reeves who ran around the Quins defence to score his third try and make the score 26-24.

Two tries for Quins allowed them to retake the lead as the score grew to 38-26 before the Bristol fightback began.

A piece of magic from George Williams created the fifth try as he offloaded the ball to put Reeves and Morris in behind the Quins defence.

With the ball in his hands, Reeves sped towards the Harlequins full back before passing to Morris who had an easy run in for his second try.

Just over ten minutes remained in the game, with the score locked at 38-31 as Bristol applied pressure on Quins for a prolonged period.

The hosts defence remained solid however as they held on until the final whistle.

Report: Harlequins U17’s 66-17 Bristol Bears U17’s

Bristol Bears U17s suffered a 66-21 defeat the hands of a powerful Quins outfit on the day.

Michael Whittaker, Joe Edwards and Ned Hill all got on the score sheet as they faced off against an impressive side.

Quins opened the scoring early in the half, gaining a 5-0 lead yet Bristol replied quickly with Whittaker evening the score at 5-5.

The Cubs ran several dominant carries in the Harlequins red zone, working towards the try line before the number eight crashed over and Regan Halse kicked the conversion.

Behind for the first time in the match, Quins showed their class scoring three unanswered tries in the remainder of the first period to make the score at the interval 26-7.

The London based side continued their dominance into the second half, scoring another four tries to increase their advantage to 52-7 with just over 15 minutes of the match remaining.

Directly from the kick off following the Quins score, the Cubs turned the ball over and spun it wide to Edwards who dotted down in the corner to score his side’s second five pointer.

The hosts scored two more tries in the game, either side of Hill’s effort in the latter stage of the match.

The blindside flanker capitalised on a collapsed maul to grab his consolatory try, running a hard line to crash over as his side were beaten 66-17.
