Rise

RISE aims to support the development of children & young people’s mental health & wellbeing through the use of both physical activity and classroom sessions that explore a range of themes and issues.

At its core, the programme nurtures improvements in the following personal qualities:

  • Resilience
  • Independence
  • Self-esteem
  • Empowerment

The rate of children and young people in Bristol being admitted to hospital due to self-harm continues to rise and is significantly worse than the national average. Children and adults from the lowest 20% of household income are three times more likely to have common mental health problems than those in the richest 20%. Targeting children and young people from the most disadvantaged areas of Bristol, RISE equips them with the knowledge, skills and methods required to support their positive mental health and wellbeing.

KEY AIMS

Improve children’s understanding of what stress is and how they can manage it. Teach children ‘Growth Mindset’ and explain why it leads to success. Educate children on the negative effects of too much screen time and show them strategies for reducing it. Improve resilience by highlighting children’s strengths. Show children how important positive connections with others are and the services that can help them if they are struggling with their mental health. Teach the children how to set SMART goals and help them find suitable role models they can base their behaviour and attitude on.

IMPACTS AND OUTCOMES

Improved mental health through participation in sport and increased knowledge of self and the class.
