Meg Varley says it is ‘a massive honour’ to be selected in the Scotland training squad, after she received her first international call-up earlier this week.
The versatile back, who can play centre or wing, shared her thoughts on this achievement and her rugby journey:
“When I found out about the selection, it wasn’t entirely unexpected as discussions had been ongoing,” she said. “However, it truly sank in when the squad was released internally last week, and when my teammates congratulated me at training.
“To be in that mix, with such amazing players and people, is a massive honour.”
Varley’s journey to the Scotland training squad stems from her grandmother hailing from Edinburgh. She credits her selection to her time with England Under 20s, her six years at Worcester, and now Bristol for shaping her path.

Looking ahead, Varley sees this opportunity with Scotland as a stepping stone toward broader goals: “The whole idea of playing in the Six Nations didn’t even exist a month ago, but the fact that it’s now a real possibility is huge for me.”
Preparation for the Scotland training sessions involves focusing on her performance with Bristol Bears over the next few weeks. Once in camp, she aims to immerse herself in learning and understanding the team’s dynamics, getting to know her teammates, and maintaining her focus.
Finally, offering advice to young aspiring rugby players, Varley encouraged them, saying: “If an opportunity comes up, go for it. If you want something, try your hardest, and then try again. Work as hard as you can and things will fall into place.”
