Tommy struggled with controlling his emotions at Merchants’ Academy School before being introduced to Bright Sparks by Bristol Bears Community Foundation.
“When I couldn’t control my emotions, it wasn’t really pleasant, I always let it out on my friends when I’m angry. I don’t know why I do it, but it just happens now and then. The hardest part is walking to school not knowing if something is going to happen.”
Bright Sparks is an education project that harnesses the Bristol Bears brand to work with young people like Tommy in local secondary schools across Bristol, providing the tools to those who struggle in a traditional classroom setting to reach their potential.
The programme engaged 180 boys last year, with 92% saying Bright Sparks enabled them to improve their attendance, punctuality and behaviour in school.
